House Church Guidelines (open in word) 12/31/17

As long as you are worshipping God from your heart, and proclaiming Jesus as Lord and Savior, there is no wrong way to worship in your home.

Below is a sample order of worship with various elements – please feel free to use these or use your own elements of worship.  You can find many good worship resources on the internet or you can pray and ask the Lord to help you create your own.  Do not be afraid to the let the Holy Spirit guide your creativity.

If people are comfortable, invite different ones to lead various aspects of worship (Call to Worship, Scripture reading, Affirmation of Faith, etc.); be sure to include children.

The Christmas Carols below are found on YouTube and offer two versions (with lyrics) – pick the one you are most comfortable with and sing along, or select your own.  Feel free to sing as many Carols/Hymns as you want.  If someone at your house wants to lead the music or offer an anthem (a special musical selection), that is wonderful.  The sermon/message is a video from Dave – feel free to discuss what he has to say.

When the Early Church gathered in Biblical times an important part of worshipping together was fellowship – so please spend time talking, sharing and fellowshipping.

Order of Worship

Call to Worship                              From Luke 2:10-13

Leader:  “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.

People: Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

Leader: This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

All:“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on                     whom his favor rests.”

1st Carol - Go Tell it on the Mountain - 2 versions to choose from with lyrics

Unison Prayer of Confession and Assurance

Almighty God, in Jesus Christ you invaded the brokenness of this world.  You came in the humility of a manger to shine the Good News of Salvation into our lives.  Yet, too often we chase the alluring temptations of the world and shun your light.  At times we actually choose to walk in darkness.  Forgive our foolishness, pride and sin.  Bring us into the light so we may experience the fullness of Your presence, and help us to walk in the hope of Christ.  Thank You for Your patience with us and Your continued grace.  In the name of Jesus we pray.  Amen

Old Testament Scripture Reading: Isaiah 9:2-7

Notice the names prophesied for Jesus in verse 6 – You might want to discuss what these names mean

2nd Carol - Joy to the World - 2 versions to choose from with lyrics

Prayer and Lord’s Prayer      Please have someone offer a prayer or invite several people – the prayer below is optional.

Almighty God, We thank You for loving us so much that You came to us in Jesus Christ.  In the midst of our celebration of Christmas, help us find joy as we remember the message of the angels who proclaimed the birth of a Savior.  In our hearts and minds may we find the joy experienced by the shepherds as they traveled to Bethlehem to find Your Son.

Care for all those in our community who are suffering illness or loss today.  Penetrate their lives with the strong assurance of your presence and peace.  And help us to be ambassadors of Your peace to all we meet.

As we Prepare to open your Word to read the story of your grace and truth, help us to hear anew the Gospel that we might be transformed more and more into the likeness of Christ.  And unite us in Your love as we unite our voices in the prayer you taught us saying:

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name.  Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever.  Amen.

Message/Sermon: A Little Girl’s Gift –

After the message, feel free to discuss what you heard – What will God’s greatest gift mean to you in 2018?

Affirmation of Faith (unison)          The Nicene Creed (2nd Article)

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.  For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.  For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.  On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

3rd Carol - Hark! the Herald Angels Sing - 2 versions to choose from with lyrics

Benediction/Blessing

May you be filled with the wonder of Mary, the obedience of Joseph, the joy of the angels, the eagerness of the shepherds, the determination of the magi, and the peace of the Christ Child. Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit bless you now and forever.  Amen.
